QUICK, WE HAVE BUT A DAY!

Time flies so quickly, and here we are at the end of May. I almost skipped my May blog post! Well, this is only a retrospective, after all...

In November of 2014 I showed a series I called "The Emerald Suite"; here I show only four paintings out of the eight exhibited - two I am redoing, and the other two were on the subject of war (in the trenches) which I will avoid for this entry.

All of the four paintings are in acrylic and ink on paper and measure 76 by 57 cm. "Pastoral" found a new home when I showed it again in my 2015 "Open Atelier" exhibition.

The next entry will be my Aqua Sulis abstract expo from 2015, and will be the last of the retrospective entries. After that, you'll start seeing some new paintings I've been working on this year.

CHIAROSCURO

In Spring of 2014 I showed five paintings in the Kerlan Showcases, here in Montmartre. I called the series "Série noire"  (The Black  Series) - not because it was Gothic, or had anything to do with the crime thriller series of French films initiated in the forties, but because I had blacked out an old series of lithographs I had done (andno longer really liked), and then etched in color to give form to my semi-spiritual inspirations. Thus, « Out of the darkness and into the Light »…I took the dark out of the night time - to paint my spirits, bright. (To paraphrase a line out of a Dylan song).

The first panel here shows "The Invocation" and "The Prayer". Both are in acrylic and ink; both measure 50 x 65 cm.

Then we have "The Sacrifice" and "Reverie", in acrylic and ink, as well; both  50 x  65 cm.

Finally, "The Artist" arrives on the scene - same technique, same size.

It's marvelous how the black sets off the color!

Next month  I will show you the Emerald Series, done also in 2014.

In Homage to Women: the Dancers

As promised, here is a new post for my lunar log, continuing with my mini-retrospective since 2013. But first, in honor of the International Women's Day, which was this week - March 8th, I would like to express my profound admiration and esteem for all women, everywhere, doing whatever they can do to make it through this not-always-so-easy life, and in particular, for those women who, in addition, try to make this a better life.

So: The first group you see here are four dancers - acrylic and ink monographs done on several different types of paper, all post card size. The first three live together at the home of one of my collector friends', (she procured “Amazon” (#3) during the “Open Ateliers” exhibition in 2013). The fourth dancer was given to a friend as a gift.

This next set of drawings represent two women who appear to be almost static - but if you look closer at the many lines which make up the whole of Cybele and Leila you can see a subtle movement flowing throughout the figures, almost an interior choreography. These multimedia drawings on paper (various colored pencils, acrylic and ink) measure 50 x 64 cm.

And perhaps some of you may recall my Tango dancers from 2014? The purple dancers on the right side-stepped over to a new home during my “Open Ateliers” exhibition in 2014. Acrylic and ink on paper, they measure 38 x 57 cm.

So that's it for now... Next month I will show you my "Black Series» that I showed in the Kerlan Showcases in Montmartre during Spring of 2014.

My Funny Valentines

Hello Everybody !

It’s been a while…we’ve been letting some water run under the bridges, taking care of some business, and now, while I start to build up a new body of work this year I thought I’d give you a little retrospective of my creations over the last three years.

What more appropriate than to start off with my 2013 Love Series – in conjunction with our soon to come, Valentine’s Day!

So, here are a few small paintings in a first series I did, done in acrylic and ink on wood and/or canvas board, 10 x 10 “.

Both “Lovers” and “Oh my Love” found new homes, one during the vernissage and another, later on.

The second group you see here are in acrylic and ink, too, but on paper – and each measure about 20" x 25”.  “Tropical Love” found new owners during the exhibition, as well - a beautiful family whose lives are based on Love.

And finally, these last two paintings are done with the same technique and are the same size as the other paper works above. It was “love at first sight” for an American couple of very good friends, when they saw “I Do” while visiting in Paris that year. “Amoroso” was dually admired, but remains in my collection for the moment.

P.S. (As most of you know, I cancelled my first blog, and since I created this new blog at “blogspot” I have not been doing many posts, so from now on I am going try to do a monthly post …guess we could call it a llog… for lunar log. And by the way, to fill you in on “beyondthedawns”… when I was a kid my nickname was “Donzie”, sometimes "Donza kid", or just "Donz"… got it? Yep! that's it : this llog is an extension of my site – donnaflandrin.com and so I call it  ‘beyond the Donz’ or,  to make it into a prettier image = beyond the dawns.)

Look forward to seeing you in March -

the next theme is dance!
